It's not you. Most sleep aids miss your brain

Why popular sleep aids such as melatonin, GABA (Valerian root), and magnesium fall short in getting you a good nights rest.

Melatonin

Melatonin is widely marketed as a sleep aid, but its benefits are often modest for people with ordinary insomnia. While it can help regulate circadian rhythms, many people find that it does not consistently improve sleep quality or help them stay asleep throughout the night. Use of melatonin to suggest to the body that it is time to sleep can be helpful for jet lag and inconsistent sleeping schedules, however, it lacks actual physiological and psychological calming effects. Despite popular belief, the sedative effects are nonexistent.

GABA (Valerian root)

Valerian root has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for sleep problems, but scientific studies have produced mixed results. The active compounds in valerian are not fully understood, and many clinical trials have found little difference between valerian and a placebo, making its effectiveness difficult to predict. Believed to interact with GABA in the brain, the neurotransmitter responsible for inhibiting neural activity that plays an important role in quieting the brain in preparation for sleep, valerian root is simply not as effective at increasing these signals as marketed. Its ability to penetrate the blood brain barrier is variable at best, and its effects leave much to be desired.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that supports many bodily functions, but evidence for its use as a sleep aid remains limited. Although magnesium supplementation works against some of the main antagonists of sleep - such as muscle cramping and stress - research suggests that its direct impact is generally small and inconsistent in the broader population. Similar to valerian root, magnesium broadly supports GABA activity, but provides no significant sleep-promoting effects.
